Winchester doubles team's run ends in state semifinalsJune 19, 2017 7:01pm

June 18--The Winchester High girls tennis team's Izzy Bruno and Brooke Scully faced the same team in the MIAA state individual championships that they did in last year's finals.

The Sachem duo met Martha's Vineyard's Victoria Scott and Elizabeth Williamson in the semifinals this year, however, and lost 6-3, 6-3 on Saturday, June 17 at St. John's High School in Shrewsbury.

"We expected a tough match," said Scully, a junior. "They fought hard and played a very good match."

Bruno and Scully took an early 3-0 lead in the first set before Scott and Williamson came back to win the set. In the second set, the Sachems led 2-1 and 3-2 before the Martha's Vineyard team won the next three games.

"At the beginning we were confident," said Winchester coach Greg Lowder. "We made some mistakes and they capitalized on them."

Said Bruno, a senior, "They're great opponents. They're always tough at the net."

Bruno and Scully won the North sectional doubles championship twice. They reached the state finals last year. They also helped Winchester to an undefeated regular season and Middlesex League title this year. The team reached the Division 2 North semifinals before falling to Concord-Carlisle, 3-2.

"It was a great year," said Bruno, who will play for Trinity College next year. "I've always learned so much from Brooke, my teammates and my coaches."

This was Lowder's first season as Winchester's head coach.

"It was a great experience," he said. "These kids were great athletes and even better people. We look forward to next year."
